Young Americans Say Facebook and Text Messages are Tools That Make Millennials More Likely to Vote

Generation Opportunity released more polling information from its national survey of young adults ages 18-29.

The newly released data underscores the ongoing power of social media and text messaging as communication tools with the highest likelihood of getting more young Americans to vote. The polling data was made available during the same week that Generation Opportunity, which was publicly announced in June of 2011, topped a combined total of two million fans on its popular Facebook pages “Being American” and “The Constitution.”

In answer to the question of which communications tool would be most likely to get more young Americans to vote, 66% of Millennials indicated Facebook reminder messages, 58% indicated text reminder messages, 38% indicated email reminder messages, 28% indicated public service announcements, and 13% indicated telephone reminders.

“Our data underscores the ongoing power of social media and text messaging among the generation hardest hit by record unemployment and the poor economy. Young adults use these technologies daily to discuss how the economy has delayed their futures and how to manage their lives in the midst of very little economic opportunity,” said Paul T. Conway, the President of Generation Opportunity and former Chief of Staff of the United States Department of Labor. ”One message from young adults is abundantly clear – they are tired of the status quo in Washington and have lost patience with elected leaders who are more focused on their own re-elections than on fixing the issues that have put America on the wrong track.”

Generation Opportunity is a social media and grassroots organization focused on organizing and mobilizing young adults through a strategy based on social media and ground operations. Previously released data from the same Generation Opportunity survey of young adults indicated that 69% believe the current leadership in Washington fails to represent the interests of young people, 61% said they would vote based on a candidates standing on the issues or record in office versus their charisma, 57% said that in 2012 they will learn more about the policy positions of presidential candidates than they did in 2008, and only 31% approve of President Obama’s handling of youth unemployment.

2012 – Most Effective Platforms to Encourage Young Americans to Vote:

Generation Opportunity commissioned a poll with the polling company, inc./WomanTrend (April 16 – 22, 2011, +/- 4% margin of error) and select results for all young Americans ages 18-29 appears below:

  • When asked, “Which, of the following, would make young people more likely to vote?” – young Americans indicated:
    • 66% Facebook Message Reminder
    • 58% Text Message Reminder
    • 38% Email Reminder
    • 28% Public Service Announcement
    • 13% Phone Call

How the Economy has Negatively Impacted the Future for Young Americans:

  • 77% of young people ages 18-29 either have or will delay a major life change or purchase due to economic factors:
    • 44% delay buying a home
    • 28% delay saving for retirement
    • 27% delay paying off student loans or other debt
    • 27% delay going back to school/getting more education or training
    • 26% delay changing jobs/cities
    • 23% delay starting a family
    • 18% delay getting married

Making Money with Articles: Banner Advertisements

When you are trying to make money off of the articles on your website, it is important to effectively promote your site so that you will attract customers and they can see just what a good, quality site you have. There are several ways so market and promote your website, one of them being though banner advertisements.

What Banner Ads Can Do For You
Banner ads can help bring visitors from others sites to your own. Although monthly fees can be expensive to advertise on high traffic sites, in the end it may be cheaper and/or a faster way to start seeing significant revenue from your website efforts, rather than waiting for SEO techniques to bring your own site to the top of search engine results. Aside from paying to advertise on someone else’s site, there are also free banner exchanges to choose from. We will look at the pros and cons of each banner advertising method below.

Free Banner Exchanges
Free banner exchanges are when you and other sites exchange each others banners. Their banner will go on your site and your banner will go one their site. Although this option is free, there are two main problems with it. First, if you want your banner on a significant number of sites, it will mean cluttering your own site up with these banners. This could even shot you in the foot if you run an affiliate website because, instead of clicking on your affiliate links, your visitors may be clicking on your banner exchange links. Secondly, you have to be really careful about the types of sites that you exchange banners with. Some sites like to gather a lot of banners so that they can be a directory or portal site and not have to have any real content. These “banner farms” or “link farms” will do nothing positive for your site and, in the meantime, you will be bringing them potential traffic.

Paid Banner Ads
As we saw above, paid banner ads cost money, but they will eventually pay off if you choose the right ones. You need to ensure that the site produces the amount of traffic that they say and that they have your ad placed in a way that invites visitors to click without being too pushy. You also want to choose a site that does not house too many other banners on the same page as yours or that there are no competitor links on the same page.

All in all, banner ads can end up being profitable for you site if you go about it the right way. If you do decide to check out banner advertisement as a marketing avenue, be sure to keep the above tips in mind.

U.S. Mobile Social Media Audience Grows 37 Percent in the Past Year

comScore released results of a study on mobile social media usage based on data from its comScore MobiLens service, which showed that 72.2 million Americans accessed social networking sites or blogs on their mobile device in August 2011, an increase of 37 percent in the past year. The study also provided new insights into how mobile users interact with social media, finding that more than half read a post from an organization, brand or event while on their mobile device.

“Social media is one of the most popular and fastest growing mobile activities, reaching nearly one third of all U.S. mobile users,” said Mark Donovan, comScore senior vice president for mobile. “This behavior is even more prevalent among smartphone owners with three in five accessing social media each month, highlighting the importance of apps and the enhanced functionality of smartphones to social media usage on mobile devices.”

More than Half of Mobile Social Networkers Access Sites on a Near Daily Basis

In August 2011, more than 72.2 million people accessed social networking sites or blogs on their mobile device, an increase of 37 percent from the previous year. Nearly 40 million U.S. mobile users, more than half of the mobile social media audience, access these sites almost every day, demonstrating the importance of this activity to people’s daily routines.

Research also indicated that although more people accessed these sites via their mobile browser, the social networking app audience grew five times faster in the past year. Best cases and covers for Kindle 4 and Kindle Touch

Now that the whole madness surrounding the new line of Amazon Kindles has finally come to an end, it is time for you to decide which one of the new e-book readers you want and you need to find ways of making them more fashionable and also protect them from scratches or bumps.

In the following lines we will therefore talk about the best protective cases and covers available right now for the new Kindle 4 and Kindle Touch.

Before getting down to the actual list, you should know that there are many cases and covers that actually fit both e-book readers, giving that they have roughly the same product dimensions, but there also a couple of accessories that only work on one of the two.

We will therefore firstly review the few covers that can be fitted on only one of the two new generation e-readers and after that we will take a quick look at the most interesting accessories for both the Kindle 4 and the Kindle Touch.

Official Kindle 4 Leather Cover

Available in black, brown, green and purple, this cover is sleek, light and very elegant. Being designed especially to fit the new Kindle 4, the accessory offers a high level of protection against scratches and contact with hard surfaces, but also versatility and functionality. The cover is designed to fold back, meaning that you can easily read on your device without taking it out of the cover.

This leather cover is elegant, functional, versatile, but also pretty expensive.

This leather cover is elegant, functional, versatile, but also pretty expensive.

The Kindle Leather Cover is temporarily out of stock, but that should change soon enough. In terms of pricing, it is not extremely affordable, but you can’t say it is expensive either (39.99 dollars on Amazon).

Official Kindle Lighted Leather Cover

Extremely similar to the cover mentioned above in terms of design and materials used, this Kindle 4 cover comes with built-in LED light for comfortably reading anytime and anywhere. The high-quality light adds brightness to the Kindle’s eInk Display, but not glare, which means that you will have no trouble in using the e-book reader at night. It also has to be mentioned that the cover doesn’t require any batteries, being able to draw power directly from the Kindle.

As you might expect, this very functional and elegant cover is not very cheap, being available right now for 59.99 bucks. It is also pretty bulky, weighing in at 4.8 ounces, which will almost double the total weight of your device.

Official Kindle Touch Lighted Leather Cover

Basically the same cover as the Kindle Lighted Leather Cover, this is especially designed for the Kindle Touch and is a bit lighter than the other similar accessory. It also comes with built-in LED reading light, it doesn’t require any batteries and is just as elegant and sleek as the other cover.

The Touch Lighted Leather Cover is available in black, brown, green and purple and goes for 59.99 dollars.

Belkin Verve Tab Folio for Kindle Touch

This ‘’made for Kindle Touch’’ folio impresses in terms of dimensions, being consistently lighter and thinner than the covers already mentioned in this post. While it is stylish and also pretty functional, coming with a very nice magnetic enclosure, you can’t help but fear it will not provide the same protection level as the covers made from real leather. The cover is available in black and purple and can be pre-ordered for $29.99.

This folio from Belkin is made specially to fit the Kindle Touch.

Built Kindle and Kindle Touch Neoprene Envelope Case

The first case that can fit both the e-book readers and the first one that is actually shipping right now is this very stylish and playful accessory from Built. Available in black, but also in an original ‘’scatter dot’’ design, the case features a nice sleeve made out of neoprene and a front flap with Velcro closure. While not as elegant and as distinguished as the other covers so far, this case should come with a high level of protection, both in terms of screen scratches and contacts with hard surfaces.

The case can be opened and closed extremely fast, but it is pretty heavy, weighing four ounces. In terms of pricing, Built’s accessory is available right now for $29.99.

Marware Atlas Kindle and Kindle Touch Cover

This stylish cover is extremely light and thin and comes with a very soft and nice exterior lined with microsuede. The cover features corner straps for holding your device in place, but also a built-in interior hand strap for improved grip and hold during usage.

Available in black and charcoal for you guys and pink and beige for you gals, the cover goes for the pretty affordable price tag of 29.99 dollars.

The Marware cover comes with a nice design and a good quality-price ratio.

Timbuk2 Kindle and Kindle Touch Slim Sleeve

With a very slim profile, but not a very sophisticated design, this Slim Sleeve from Timbuk2 is made out of foam and should provide a decent level of protection for your e-book reader of choice. Being TSA (Transportation Security Administration) friendly, the Timbuk2 accessory is available in two color schemes, with a black, gunmetal and red combination or only black and gunmetal. In terms of pricing, it is pretty much as cheap as it gets, with a $24.99 price tag.

Marware Eco-Flip for Kindle and Kindle Touch Cover

If you want a more premium cover for your e-reader or tablet today, you probably already know that the Marware accessories should be on top of your shopping list. With an eco-friendly leather exterior and a soft microsuede interior, the Eco-Flip looks and feels very nice, but also offers a high level of protection.

The cover is functional as well, featuring a built-in interior hand strap for improved grip and hold, but also a couple of thin pockets for storing ID or credit cards. While being a bit bulky, at a 4.5 ounces weight, this cover is classy and elegant, but also pretty affordable (available for 34.99 dollars at Amazon).

The Marware Eco-Flip is probably the ''most premium'' cover for Kindle and Kindle Touch right now.

Belkin Portfolio Sleeve for Kindle and Kindle Touch

The last protective accessory we are going to review in this article is actually the cheapest of them all.Available for only 19.99 dollars, the Belkin Portfolio Sleeve is not very light, nor extremely elegant, but should be durable nevertheless.

With a neoprene exterior especially designed for extra protection and gripability, the cover is unfortunately only available in black. However, Belkin’s accessory offers plenty of space for holding notes, receipts or other small pieces of paper and also comes with a dual zipper closure system, which is at the same time functional and easy to use.

The Belkin sleeve is clearly the most affordable Kindle and Kindle Touch cover.

Wrap-up

While choosing an e-book reader has become more difficult than ever after Amazon’s new Kindle 4 and Kindle Touch’s releases, you may also find yourselves pretty puzzled when trying to choose the perfect cover or case for your device.

With excellent quality-price ratios, functionality, elegance and versatility, all the protective accessories mentioned above could be great choices for any technology enthusiast. All of them will practically make your e-book reader unbreakable and ‘’unscratcheable’’ and the difference between these covers and cases will probably be made by the small and subtle details and touches of originality.

And whether you will go for one of the lighted covers, the slimmest or lightest of them all or simply the most affordable of these, one thing is clear nevertheless. You will not regret your choice and you will make your e-reader better, stronger and more fashionable!

After talking a bit about the upcoming Amazon Kindle Fire slate and how it should revolutionize the entire tablet market, we thought necessary to dedicate an article to accessories designed to protect and to add functionality to the 7-incher from Amazon.

While there is still some time before the Fire will actually start shipping, there are probably many of you who have already pre-ordered the tablet and think about how to ‘’treat’’ it. Timbuk2 Kindle Fire Slim Sleeve

While it may not be as elegant or fashionable as some of the other covers, the Timbuk2 Slim Sleeve is extremely light (only one pound) and easy to transport. The design is playful and ingenious and the black-gunmetal-red color scheme will probably attract interest from teenagers and kids. Marware C.E.O. Hybrid for Kindle Fire Cover

We saved for last probably the most impressive Kindle Fire cover available right now. With a nice and elegant agenda design, this C.E.O. Hybrid from Marware is clearly the strongest protective accessory you could get for your Kindle Fire at the moment, but also a functional stand.

Available in four different colors (black, brown, green and pink), Marware’s cover is pretty heavy, weighing in at 6.1 ounces, but somehow is not at all bulky. The built-in interior hand strap improves significantly the grip when actually using the tablet, while the high-grade elastic strap is designed to hold the lid open or closed during transportation.

This cover is not very eco-friendly, being made out of genuine leather, but on the other hand is as strong and resistant as it could get. It should also support your Kindle Fire in two different angles when used as a stand and all in all it is the perfect accessory for increasing your tablet’s functionality and versatility.

As you might expect, Marware’s hybrid is not very affordable, but you couldn’t say that it is expensive either, being available for 44.99 dollars.

The Marware C.E.O. is the strongest, heaviest and most versatile Kindle Fire cover.

Wrap-up

These are pretty much all the affordable, functional and/or good-looking cases, covers and folios for Amazon Kindle Fire available on the market right now and you must say that this is a pretty tight and impressive list.

There are accessories for every taste and need out there, whether you appreciate original design, elegance, functionality or versatility. Neither of the covers and folios presented here is dirt cheap, but on the other hand all come with pretty decent quality-price ratios.

All in all, it would be extremely difficult to recommend only one of the products mentioned above, giving that all of them come with their own list of advantages and disadvantages and pretty much each of them is targeted towards different people with different needs. Therefore, you should first consider what you actually expect from an accessory of this kind and only after that should you decide to go for one or the other.

Amazon Kindle Keyboard- details, features and prices(video)

Usually, when a tablet, a smartphone or an e-reader is upgraded, the older version of the device is pulled out of the market to leave room for the new gadget. That is what most of you would have probably expected to happen with the old Amazon Kindle recently, especially considering the fact that the e-reader is now available in not one, but two upgraded versions.

However, the old Amazon Kindle is still available for sale and is actually expected to continue selling, being rebranded as the Kindle Keyboard. The third generation e-reader should still appeal to some of you technology enthusiasts for a couple of reasons I am going to detail in the following lines.

We will therefore take a look at the things that still make the Kindle Keyboard special and competitive, but also at the prices and the full features of the e-reader. Finally, you will have the opportunity to check out an exclusive video, where you can take a better look at this very popular gadget.

Design and build

The Keyboard’s biggest problem, compared with the new Kindle 4 and the Kindle Touch, is probably the design, which is pretty old-fashioned. The Keyboard is also quite heavy in comparison with the new e-readers, weighing in at about 8.5 ounces.

The Kindle Keyboard is still a good and reliable gagdet.

The Kindle Keyboard is still a good and reliable gagdet.

In terms of product dimensions, things are still pretty competitive nevertheless. The Keyboard measures 7.5 x 4.8 x 0.34 inches and is fairly compact and portable overall. The e-reader is also fairly sturdy, giving an impression of durability and reliability.

Display, hardware and features

The Kindle Keyboard sports a 6-inch E Ink display with proprietary waveform, font technology, 800 x 600 pixels resolution and 16 shades of gray. This is pretty much identical to the screens featured by the new Kindles and is still the quality standard for e-book readers nowadays. The Kindle cannot display colors and can only support static content, but when it comes to reading, no matter what the lighting conditions should be, you can expect a clear and crisp image.

In terms of on-device storage, the Keyboard comes with 4 GB of internal memory, which should be enough for holding up to 3,500 books. You also get free cloud storage for all Amazon content, meaning that if you delete something from your device, you can have easy access to it again.

Other features include Wireless connectivity and optional 3G, but also audio support, which is nowhere to be found on the new Kindle 4. Therefore, aside from reading e-books, you can also have access to audiobooks and other mp3 files on the Keyboard.

Software and battery life

The Kindle Keyboard comes with access to literally millions of books, newspapers, audiobooks, magazines and docs, including public library books, which you can borrow directly on your e-reader. For most of the books you will have to pay a fee, which varies from case to case, but there are also over two million free, out-of-copyright, classical books.

The Kindle Keyboard is heavier and bulkier than the new Kindle 4, but it is also more functional than the new generation e-reader.

The Kindle Keyboard is heavier and bulkier than the new Kindle 4, but it is also more functional than the new generation e-reader.

The e-reader also features a pretty basic, but functional experimental browser and a Qwerty keyboard, which is actually the biggest difference between it and the new-generation Kindles. On one hand, this makes the device bulky and heavy, but on another hand, it makes it better for writing text and browsing.

As for the battery life, this is probably as good as it could get on a gagdet of this kind. The Kindle Keyboard is therefore able to run for up to two months between charges, based on a low use, or for about three weeks, based on average use and with wireless permanently on.

Pricing

While in terms of features, quality and reliability, things have stayed the same for the Kindle Keyboard, its price has actually dropped in order to attract customers. The third generation e-reader now starts at 99 dollars, for the wireless version which includes Amazon’s ‘’special offers’’ and ads.

If you don’t want to be bugged by ads, however, you can go for a more expensive, 139 dollars version, which also features only wireless connectivity, but ships Internationally, to more than 100 countries.

If you also want 3G on your device, you will either pay 139 bucks (with ads) or $189 (without special offers – International version).

Wrap-up

While the Amazon Kindle Keyboard is not a wine and it doesn’t get better over time, we can’t say that it gets worse either. The basic e-reader is still the same reliable, portable and functional device as a year ago and, with a more affordable price tag than ever, should still attract some customers.

It is not as light and compact as the new Kindle 4 or as stylish as the Kindle Touch, but it is probably the best of the three when it comes to the interface and typing and it also comes with audio support.

All in all, if you have it, we don’t see any reason of giving it up or replacing it, while if you don’t have it and you decide to buy it, you will probably not regret your investment.

Amazon Kindle 4 vs Kindle 3 ebook readers- comparison, with video

Even though they are still not as popular as high-end tablets, e-book readers have significantly increased in popularity in the last couple of years, especially due to the Amazon Kindle family.

Lacking most of the features that make tablets so great, but impressing in terms of portability and price, it is no wonder that so many technology enthusiasts right now own or plan to own an e-reader.

And after the latest generation Kindle’s release, it is no longer a problem of whether to get an e-reader or not, but rather which one to choose. You have the old Kindle 3, which has been discounted and is still extremely functional, the new Kindle 4, the cheapest and lightest e-reader right now, and the Kindle Touch, with an exciting new interface.

In the following lines we will take a short comparative look at the old Kindle 3, now marketed as the Kindle Keyboard, and the Kindle 4, trying to find out which one of the two is actually better and more suitable for your needs. Stay tuned for the written article, but also for an exclusive video comparison at the end of the post.

Design and display

The biggest difference between the new and the old Kindle is probably the design. While the Keyboard comes with a pretty old-fashioned and classical look, the new Kindle 4 is more elegant, more classy and, most importantly, lighter and more compact.

The Kindle 4 (on the left) and the Kindle Keyboard (on the right)

The Kindle 4 (on the left) and the Kindle Keyboard (on the right)

And if you thought the Keyboard was portable, at a 8.5 ounces weight, the new Kindle, weighing in at 5.98 ounces, is light as a feather and will become your perfect travel companion. The new Kindle is also shorter, lacking the keyboard and featuring instead a cool and nice 5-way controller.

In terms of display, we can’t seem to notice any difference between the two, both devices sporting the same 6-inch E Ink screen with 800 x 600 pixels resolution and a 16-level gray scale.

Hardware and features

While both these gadgets are basically intended for the same purpose, reading e-books, there are a couple of subtle, but important differences in terms of features. First of all, the Kindle 4 lacks the speakers and the microphone jack that are featured by the Kindle Keyboard, meaning that you don’t have audio support anymore and you can’t play music or audiobooks on the new generation e-reader.

The Kindle Keyboard is the only one of the two with audio support.

The Kindle Keyboard is the only one of the two with audio support.

Secondly, while you can browse on both the Kindles through wireless connection, only the Keyboard comes with optional 3G. There is also the problem of the battery life, which is satisfactory on both devices, but is clearly better on the old Keyboard.

The third generation e-reader could go for up to two months with light use and wireless off, while the new Kindle 4 can only last up to a month between charges.

Finally, in terms of storage space, the Keyboard is yet again superior, featuring 4 GB of internal memory. The new Kindle 4 only comes with 2 GB, but this is actually more than enough, giving that you will still be able to store around 1,400 books on your device.

The Kindle 4 is more compact, but the Kindle Keyboard is more functional.

The Kindle 4 is more compact, but the Kindle Keyboard is more functional.

Software and interface

While in terms of hardware the differences are subtle, when it comes to the interface things are pretty far apart. As I already mentioned, the Kindle 4 lacks the keyboard, which is a good thing in terms of design and weight, but a pretty bad thing when it comes to the device’s functionality.

The virtual keyboard of the Kindle 4 is far from being perfect for a 21st century gadget.

The virtual keyboard of the Kindle 4 is far from being perfect for a 21st century gadget.

While on the Keyboard you could surf the web pretty easily and post comments on websites and blogs, the new Kindle 4 is an e-reader and that is pretty much all. It is true, the 5-way controller allows you to write in theory, but the actual writing process is difficult and annoying. You have to select each letter individually from an on-screen keyboard, which is far from ideal.

In terms of apps supported on the e-readers, you get access to millions of books, newspapers and docs on both devices (including PDF files), but only the Keyboard also allows you access to music and audiobooks.

Pricing

While the Keyboard comes with more features and with extra functionality, the new Kindle 4 has its own ace up its sleeve, the price. The fourth-generation e-reader starts at 79 dollars (the ad-supported version) and is also available for 109 bucks, without ads, in an internationally available version.

The Kindle Keyboard is itself pretty affordable, starting at 99 dollars (the Wi-Fi only version with ads), but that’s the US version. The International version goes for $139, and if you want the 3G enabled Kindle, prices for those go for between $139 to $189, based on where you need it delivered.

Check out the links above for more details about each tablet, plus pictures, reviews for buyers and the option to buy them yourself.

It is pretty difficult to state which one of the two devices is actually better.

It is pretty difficult to state which one of the two devices is actually better.

Wrap-up

Without beating it around the bush, it is very clear that both these devices have their strong, but also their weak points. The old Keyboard is far better for browsing, offers audio support, optional 3G and more storage. On the other hand, the Kindle 4 is lighter and more compact than ever before and also comes at the best price possible.

All in all, it is almost impossible to say which one of the two is the better overall device because they are both great and also because they pretty much have different targets. If you only want to read e-books and you are looking for the best deal on the market, the Kindle 4 is clearly the perfect device for you, but if you also want to type on your device, listen to music and you don’t have a problem in spending an extra buck, the Keyboard remains the ideal choice.

Amazon Kindle Fire- the cheap 7 inch multimedia tablet- prices and features

If you are in the market for a powerful, good-looking and fast tablet and you have a decent budget on your hands, your possibilities are countless, including such devices as the Apple iPad 2, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, Asus Eee Pad Transformer or Toshiba Thrive.

However, if you want a decent slate, with good technical specs, a nice look, but you are on a tighter budget, you almost can’t find anything satisfying on the market right now. This status quo is set to change in less than two months, though, after Amazon has officially announced a couple of days ago the release of their first-ever high-end tablet, the Kindle Fire.

The Fire, while not being as powerful as some of the gadgets I named above, comes at a great price and in fact doesn’t sacrifice that much in terms of performance. In the following lines we will take a quick look at what does the Fire bring to the table and how it compares with some of its strongest competitors.

Design and build

Even though you can’t say that the Fire is highly original when it comes to its look, you can’t actually say that it’s ugly either. It pretty much lacks curves, but the lines are pretty straightforward and give the overall design a touch of elegance and class.

The new Kindle Fire is good-looking, decent in terms of performance and very affordable.

The new Kindle Fire is good-looking, decent in terms of performance and very affordable.

The all-black color scheme is itself pretty elegant and nice, while the product dimensions and weight are not ideal, but competitive nevertheless. The Fire weighs 14.6 ounces (413 grams), which is an ounce over HTC Flyer’s weight, but is a little under what the Galaxy Tab 7 and the Acer Iconia Tab A100 go for. The exact dimensions of the Fire are 7.5 x 4.7 x 0.45 inches, which is about what you will get from other 7-inch tablets as well.

Screen, hardware and performance

The Fire features a 7-inch multi-touch display with IPS technology, anti-reflective treatment and 1024 x 600 pixels resolution. This is extremely nice in terms of viewing angles, but should do a pretty good job when it comes to colors and brightness as well.

In terms of hardware, the Fire is not exactly on-par with some of the other 7-inch tablets on the market, but is satisfactory nevertheless. Amazon’s new gadget is powered by a 1 GHz dual-core TI OMAP 4 processor with 512 MB of RAM and comes with 8 GB of internal storage space.

Software, battery life and others

While in terms of hardware the Kindle Fire is only a satisfactory device, when it comes to the software this is a great product. The 7-incher runs a modified and customized version of Android 2.3 and the number of integrated apps is almost overwhelming. You have access to books, games, multimedia content and all kinds of nice and useful apps. Furthermore, if you though that the poor internal storage space will give you headaches, you should think again, because you have unlimited cloud storage for all Amazon content.

The Fire comes with an ultra fast Silk cloud-accelerated browser, which should provide the snappiest internet experience available, but also with some nice and original apps, as the built-in email app that allows you to get all your webmail from different providers into a single inbox.

In terms of battery life, the Fire should provide an autonomy of about seven or eight hours and when it comes to other features, connectivity and ports you should know that the 7-incher only features WiFi, stereo speakers and a headphone jack.

The price is clearly Fire's number one strong point.

The price is clearly Fire's number one strong point.

Pricing and availability

The Kindle Fire is already up for pre-orders on Amazon.com, but it will only start shipping in mid-November. The price is great and, if you ask me, it is the best deal you can get right now on the tablet market. The Fire is therefore available for 199 bucks.

Competition

We have already said a couple of words about how the Fire compares with some of its competitors in terms of design. When it comes to the hardware, Amazon’s product is pretty much on-par with the Galaxy Tab 7, featuring a 1 GHz A8 Cortex processor with 1 GB of RAM, the HTC Flyer, powered by a 1.5 GHz single-core processor with 1 GB of RAM, but slightly inferior than the Iconia Tab A100, which features an NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processor with 1 GB of memory.

In terms of connectivity and ports, the Kindle Fire is easily surpassed by most of its 7-inch competitors, while when it comes to software Amazon’s tablet is clearly better than the Galaxy Tab 7, but can’t compare with the Iconia Tab A100 running Android Honeycomb.

As for the pricing, the Fire is by far the most affordable 7-incher out there, going for 100 bucks less than the Galaxy Tab 7 and almost 130 dollars under Iconia Tab A100’s price.

Wrap-up

While the Amazon Kindle Fire can’t be considered as serious competition for the iPad 2 or other very strong and fast tablets available on the market right now, it will most likely attract great attention due to its very competitive price and large number of pre-loaded and available apps.

The Fire is definitely not an ‘’iPad killer’’, with decent, but not impressive technical specifications and it is after all a 7-inch tablet, which for some of you may be too little. On the other hand, it could be the perfect device for those of you who look for the best quality-price ratio.

If you would like to take a closer look at Kindle Fire’s features and specs, you can check out this video preview right here:

2011 Kindle readers: Kindle Classic, Touch and Keyboard

While when it comes to tablets nowadays the competition is extremely close, with a very wide range of top notch products, the e-book reader market is still pretty far from being overcrowded. Having that in mind, the people at Amazon, the most important e-reader producer for a while now, have decided to throw not one, but two new products on the market.

The new Kindle and Kindle Touch joined the old Kindle, renamed ‘’ Kindle Keyboard’’, and together they form a very strong, united and interesting family of e-book readers. All three products have their strong and weak points, but considering the competition you will probably be pretty satisfied with any of the three devices right now.

In the following lines we will take a quick look at these e-readers’ features, prices and technical specs, in order to establish each one’s advantages and disadvantages, but also to determine, if possible, which one of the three is the better choice for technology geeks at the moment.

Amazon Kindle reader

The new Amazon Kindle is the 4th generation of the popular ebook reader and, while it comes with some not very impressive features, it has a great advantage. Scratch that, because it actually has two advantages, come to think of it.

First of all, the new e-reader is considerably lighter and more compact than the old one, weighing 5.98 ounces (170 grams) and measuring 6.5 x 4.5 x 0.34 inches. The second strong point is of course the price tag of only 79 dollars. This is however for the ‘’special offers’’ version of the new Kindle, but you can also get the model without ads at 109 bucks.

The 4th generation Amazon Kindle is cheaper than ever before.

The 4th generation Amazon Kindle is cheaper than ever before.

In terms of storage space, it comes with 2 GB of internal memory, as well as unlimited cloud storage for Amazon content. The display is the same old 6-inch E Ink Pearl (slightly improved, though, according to Amazon), but the keyboard has disappeared. Instead of it, you have a 5-way controller, which, while being good-looking, is not very functional and will make typing on this device a pretty complicated procedure.

Amazon Kindle Touch

The second freshly released Amazon e-reader is the Kindle Touch, which also comes with a 6-inch E Ink display with 600 x 800 pixels resolution. However, this is actually a touchscreen, which cancels the Classic Kindle’s biggest problem (typing). The Touch also comes with access to audiobooks, a feature that, unfortunately, is nowhere to be found on the new Classic Kindle.

When it comes to product dimensions and weight, the Touch is pretty light and compact, even though not as light and compact as the Classic Kindle. It weighs 7.5 ounces and measures 6.8 x 4.7 x 0.4 inches.

The Kindle Touch is heavier, but features a better screen and interface than the classic Kindle.

The Kindle Touch is heavier, but features a better screen and interface than the classic Kindle.

The interface is nice and responsive and the browsing experience is slightly better than that of its lower end sibling. In terms of storage space, the Touch comes with 4 GB of internal memory, which is double than what the Kindle has to offer, while when it comes to battery life, things are as productive as they can possible be.

The Touch can therefore last up until two months based on light use and with wireless off. And because we have mentioned the wireless connectivity, let’s also say that the Touch is also available with optional 3G.

In terms of pricing, the Touch is, as you might expect, more expensive than the Classic Kindle, but overall it’s itself a bargain. You can get the touchscreen e-reader for 99 dollars (the Wi-fi only version with special offers), $139 (the Wi-Fi version without ads), 149 and 189 bucks (the 3G models with and without the special offers).

Amazon Kindle Keyboard

Even though Amazon has released two new and very nice e-book readers, that doesn’t mean you can’t get the old Kindle version as well, if you get nostalgic. This older model, which is now known as ‘’Amazon Keyboard’’ is basically identical with the new Kindle, except for the keyboard.

The older Kindle Keyboard can most definitely still draw some attention.

The older Kindle Keyboard can most definitely still draw some attention.

Of course, the old Amazon Keyboard is heavier and bulkier too, but on the other hand it does come with 4 GB of internal storage space, a better battery and audio support. In terms of pricing, this has been recently discounted and goes right now for between 99 dollars (the Wi-Fi with special offers version) and 189 bucks (the 3G model with no included ads).

Wrap-up

No matter how you look at it and how critical and skeptical you want to be, the new and refreshed line of Amazon Kindles is extremely competitive and is bound to be a great success. The classic Kindle is the most affordable gadget you can get on the market right now and, while it offers less features than its siblings, I am sure that technology enthusiasts on a budget will love it.

The Touch offers a better all-around experience and probably the maximum you would hope to get from a basic device like an e-reader, while the old Amazon Keyboard, even though it could be considered an old-fashioned and obsolete gadget, has the perfect quality-price ratio to get its fair share of customers.

All in all, it’s pretty difficult to state which one of the three e-book readers from Amazon is better right now. However, the winner of a theoretical battle between the Kindle Classic, Touch and Keyboard is not one of the three devices, but us the technology fans which will have trouble picking up one or the other because they are oh so similar and oh so great.
